i'm not typical

Friday night i was adventuring around Boston with some girlfriends just having a good time. I was introduced to a few of my friend's guy friends and we got to talking. We were talking about movies and he asked if I had seen Inception. I had and he brought up that Leonardo DiCaprio plays a similar role in Shutter Island. Now, what he didn't know was that I am completely obsessed with the book and the movie Shutter Island. I literally only stopped reading the book to sleep (which I couldn't even do because I was so worked up about the book) and saw the movie the night it came out. Needless to say, as soon as he brought it up I exclaimed, "that is my FAVORITE book... and movie! Besides The Departed." His response was "you're messed up." I was mildly offended, but of course asked why he thought that. He told me, "Girls' favorite movies are not supposed to be The Departed or Shutter Island, it should be something like The Notebook." I wanted to gag because I actually really dislike The Notebook and all Nicholas Sparks movies and books in general.

The point of my rant is: why are girls expected to enjoy all the lovey-dovey movies and romantic comedies? Honestly, I think that they are extremely unrealistic and just sometimes plain silly. How many times can a person watch the young beautiful girl fall in love with the man of her dreams after a few trials and obstacles? It gets pretty repetative after the fifth time. I will admit that I've read my fair share of Nicholas Sparks novels and I was intrigued for a short time, but they've lost their appeal and I'd much rather read something that's thrilling or even scary rather than yet another romance novel.

I thought that my obviously unnatural pick in movies would maybe be intriguing to a new person, but apparently it just came off as strange. To be clear, I'm really not strange I just don't enjoy feeling sorry for beautiful people who do eventually get what they want. I'd rather follow a crazy person through a seemingly haunted psych facility or watch members of the Irish mob shoot each other in Southie. Sorry if that's "messed up" in your opinion. I think it makes me stand out from the crowd.

  1. I think you are dead on right! I am not saying that I agree with the fact that "The Notebook" makes you gag, especially since it is one of my favorite movies, but I do think that it isn't right that girls are expected to find lovey-dovey books and movies attractive. Shutter Island is actually one of the most recent and most amazing movies I have ever seen. I though the plot was incredible and the boy who told you that you were messed up because of it should go get a reality check. Girls are just as able to watch and love movies like Inception.

  2. So true! Why can't girls like Old School and The Boondock Saints? I can't lie though...I really love Sweet Home Alabama. It's a southern thing.
